How to fix the "You are not authorized to access this resource" error in Schoology

Students and instructors may encounter the Turnitin error message "You are not authorized to access this resource" if a user's account is not properly synced or enrolled in the Schoology course with a supported role.

Please note: Turnitin only supports the following user roles: Teacher, Teaching assistant (TA), and Student.

How to resolve the error

If a student is receiving this error, an instructor can usually resolve it by refreshing the student's enrollment using the steps below.

Step 1: Refresh student enrollment (instructors only)
  1. Access the affected Schoology course and click on the Members tab.
  2. Locate the student who is experiencing the error.
  3. Click on the settings wheel next to their name and select Unenroll.
  4. Once they are unenrolled, click Add members and re-enroll them into the course.

This action forces the student's enrollment data to pass through to Turnitin correctly.

Step 2: Verify the fix

Ask the student to attempt their submission to the assignment again. In most cases, they will now be able to submit successfully.

Still experiencing issues?

If following the steps above does not resolve the error, please raise a support ticket. To help our team resolve this quickly, please include a Turnitin paper ID from a successful submission within the same assignment.
